Between the field and the table. Food supply chains in Catalonia
In the last 60 years, Catalonia has experienced a profound reorganization of the agri-food supply chains. The pig sector has been industrialized and concentrated in 5 companies. This dynamic has led to productive specialization, territorial fragmentation and industrialization of other sectors such as poultry, fruit, oil or fishing.
In distribution, a model has been imposed that is increasingly controlled by supermarkets, which has favoured overconsumption of meat and ultra-processed, food inflation and waste. Today 10 chains control 65% of all sales.
Public policies must be reoriented towards democratic planning and governance of food chains. The objective is threefold: to achieve a sustainable system, guarantee a healthy and affordable diet, and create good working and living conditions for all workers in the sector.
